Starting with a GROWL! Liddy kicks North Cairns home with six goals over Port Douglas

It was a hot day at Watsons Oval, but those who came to the ground Saturday got a magnificent day of football. It was an all around successful opening day of the season for the Tigers and Cairns AFL with plenty of spectators coming down to enjoy the weather and watch the footy. Most of the crowd watched the games from the new covered area right on the sidelines at the clubhouse and witnessed another battle between these clubs, with the Tigers geting the first points of the season against a hard to beat Port Douglas Crocs.

REX Liddy-powered North Cairns proved their preseason buzz was not all talk with a fast-finishing defeat of the Port Douglas Crocs at Watsons Oval on Saturday.

Recruitment and retention has transformed last year’s also-rans into a legitimate premiership threat and that was all on show as the Tigers withstood a Crocs side that did not go down without a fight.

Leading by 15 points at three-quarter time, the Tigers stretched out in front of a healthy home crowd to finish 13.13 (91) to 10.9 (69) winners.

“It’s a fantastic win for the club, under the new roof (at their developed clubhouse) with a good few people here,”

Tigers’ player-coach Kane Richter said.

The stage was set before the bounce when a minute’s silence was held for Graeme Elliot, a former Port player, who tragically died late last month.

It was Norths who channelled that best though, kicking four goals to the Crocs’ two behinds in a wind-assisted first quarter.

Port responded to peg the lead back to one goal by the half-time break.

It was an even contest in the third term but then Liddy, whose last game in Cairns was for the Gold Coast Suns against Richmond last season, had the final say with three final-quarter goals to seal the result.

He was too crafty for the Port defence, effortlessly finding open space to which his midfield obliged by hitting him on the chest.

Liddy was released by the Suns this season when the first Cape York AFL product could not commit to the rigours of the sport. But he was back enjoying his footy in front of friends and family, kicking six goals and setting up several others to help the Tigers home.

“Yeah he was good, he warmed into the game; realised where the boys were kicking the ball,” Richter said. “As he gets a bit fitter we’ll get him back on the ball.”

Fellow recruit Adam Mueller was equally impressive in defence, while Richter was clean and concise in the midfield and Dwayne Bosen electric at both ends of the park.

Ben McCartney, one of the few remaining players in a drastically new-look Port team, kicked three goals, including a booming left foot effort.

Rowan Handley and Dylan Wearmouth were both impressive in their AFL Cairns’ debuts.

“They’ve got a lot of fresh faces but they were fantastic; after that quarter time break they smashed us. They’ll be one to watch,” Richter said.

Tigers rivals next week, Cairns Saints, romped home against last year’s premiers Manunda to set up an intriguing Easter Monday clash between the two teams most have tipped will battle for the premiership.

Spectator Deck, Outdoor Kitchen, Netball Courts, and Club Beautification!

Welcome to the 2012 season for the MyStyle Homes North Cairns Australian Football & Sporting Club. North’s will see many new & exciting events and activities in the next 12 months. Many changes have already occurred at an operational level within the football club, and now the clubhouse itself is awaiting a major renovation and facelift, with the construction of a new spectator deck at Watson’s.

Our Senior and Reserves football team will continue under the leadership of Kane Richter and pre-season training has already commenced on Tuesdays & Thursdays. A Football Operations Committee has been formed to streamline and relieve pressure from the Executive, and is led by Rick Hanlon, Kim Tennick & Darin “Hoss” Molloy. Succession has been nurtured and built into our 2012 Senior Team, with the uptake and retention of many of our talented U16 and U18 Youth Football cohort. We anticipate much success in 2012.

Our Junior Football will build on its success of 2011. It is developing and shaping its core operations with quality volunteers and accredited high quality coaching staff.

Our Women’s side plays during the men’s off season from November to March. The team won the 2011 Premiership and is in a very good shape to succeed again in 2012.

North Cairns welcomed the addition of an inaugural North Cairns Tigers Netball Team in 2011. Great success was had, with the Tigers A Grade bringing home a Grand Final win, and Tigers Reserves bringing home the Runner’s Up Cup. 2012 will see the exciting development of grass netball training courts and the addition of junior teams.

A fundraising & sponsor appreciation focus will be invigorated in 2012. MyStyle Homes is a generous and loyal supporter of the North Cairns Tigers; however we seek the ongoing support and assistance of North’s Supporters, Members & Players to maintain an unrelenting focus on raising much needed funds for Club improvements.

As you may anticipate North’s are seeing many new & exciting things on the horizon and there is an authentic opportunity for us to develop a strong, progressive sporting identity in Cairns – however, this takes many hands and much commitment.

Our newly elected Executive Committee is looking forward to the upcoming football season with much excitement, but will need as much help and support that they can get.

The committee members are:

PRESIDENT Brett Potter
VICE PRESIDENT Rick Hanlon
SECRETARY Frankie Clive
COMMITTEE Dean Uebergang,
Richard Lillie,
Kevin Williams,
Alisha Adams

Our new spectator deck is an exciting prospect. As a Life Member/Member/Player Member, we are inviting you and/or your family to become an embedded part of North Cairns Tigers history by contributing to the construction of this new addition to the Clubhouse. North’s would like to invite you to donate $100. This donation includes a plaque recognizing the donor as well as exclusive invitation to the Grand Opening once the construction is finalised. The collection of funds will be displayed inside the club alongside the artists impressions of the finished deck – with a target of $100,000 so that we can share and monitor our donations and contribution. If you would like to donate or commit services/materials in kind to this project, please complete and return the attached for to Jill Lillie, Club Treasurer.

We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you in 2012.

Go The Mighty Tigers!

Tigers roar into the finals with another win, eyes on the flag!

North Cairns 6.8.44 d Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs 4.1.25

North Cairns Tigers secured an undefeated regular season with a win over the Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs on Saturday in the AFL Cairns women’s competition. But the Tigers captain-coach Jo Butland knows better than to start celebrating.

“An undefeated season means nothing if we don’t win next week or the week after,” she said. “We’re focused on winning flags, so until that happens, we won’t be celebrating.” The Tigers’ 6.8 (44)-4.1 (25) win over the Bulldogs was as good as any this season, Butland said. “They put a lot of pressure on us but it was good to see our defence responded well.”

The Tigers are now only two wins away from a near-perfect season. The only minor blemish was a draw against South Cairns Cutters. North Cairns face second-placed Manunda Hawks at Watson’s Oval nextweek.
