Tigers roar into the finals with another win, eyes on the flag!

North Cairns 6.8.44 d Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs 4.1.25

North Cairns Tigers secured an undefeated regular season with a win over the Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs on Saturday in the AFL Cairns women’s competition. But the Tigers captain-coach Jo Butland knows better than to start celebrating.

“An undefeated season means nothing if we don’t win next week or the week after,” she said. “We’re focused on winning flags, so until that happens, we won’t be celebrating.” The Tigers’ 6.8 (44)-4.1 (25) win over the Bulldogs was as good as any this season, Butland said. “They put a lot of pressure on us but it was good to see our defence responded well.”

The Tigers are now only two wins away from a near-perfect season. The only minor blemish was a draw against South Cairns Cutters. North Cairns face second-placed Manunda Hawks at Watson’s Oval nextweek.

Another game, another mauling for trim Tigers

North Cairns 5.5.35 d Manunda Hawks 1.2.8

If Saturday’s performance is anything to go by, North Cairns Tigers’ officials better start making room in the club’s trophy cabinet. A grand final berth seems imminent after the top-of-the-table Tigers thumped second-placed, Manunda Hawks 5.5 (35) to 1.2 (8) at Watson’s Oval.

The Tigers must now beat Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs next week to finish the regular season with an unbeaten record.

“We’re playing really well at the moment and it’s the right time of the year,” Jo Butland, who scored two goals for the Tigers on Saturday, said. “We’re just focussed on getting through next week without injuries and making sure we carry some momentum into the finals.”

The loss was a bad sign for the Hawks, as they prepare to face the Tigers again in the first week of the finals. Since handing Tigers their only loss last season, the Hawks have been on the receiving end of several blowout losses.

“I think we match-up against them really well,” Butland said. “With the other teams they have some unpredictable players who are hard to plan for, but I don’t think the Hawks have that unpredictability. We’re able to play our game against them.”

Bulldogs will go into the Tigers’ match full of confidence after a dominant performance on Saturday saw their opponents score just three behinds. The Bulldogs outscored the South Cairns Cutters by 48 points in an emphatic 7.9 (51) – 0.3 (3) victory.

Cairns Womens AFL - Ruck Contest Tigers vs Centrals

If there were any doubts about the status of the North Cairns Tigers defence of the AFL Cairns Women’s League premiership, they were quickly quashed on Saturday. The Tigers were ruthless in dismantling Centrals Trinity Bulldogs, allowing their opponents to score one solitary behind in a 39-point win whitewash at Crathern Park. The Bulldogs were left without potency up forward with key goalkicker Kat Fatnowna unavailable.

While the Tigers failed to kick a major in the opening quarter their defence was also able to keep the Bulldogs scoreless for the first half. The competition now appears to be a race between the Tigers and last year’s grand finalists Manunda Hawks. The Tigers, however, hold the psychological edge having beaten the Hawks by a goal earlier this month.
